The PGA Championship looked a lot like the U.S. Open, with only seven players under par when darkness finally covered Oakland Hills on Thursday and put "The Monster" to sleep. It sounded like a U.S. Open, too. "There's only one guy who's going to like this place by the end of the week," Ben Curtis said.

Annika Sorenstam birdied six of her last eight holes, shooting a 6-under 66 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Scandinavian TPC. The Swede, who is hosting the Ladies European Tour event for the last time, started on the 10th hole in rainy weather. She parred the first 10 holes, then reeled off four birdies. She also birdied the last two holes.

· Perry withdraws from PGA with eye injury

Kenny Perry, playing in a major for the first time this year, withdrew from the PGA Championship after an opening-round 79 because of an eye injury. Perry, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, is ranked 17th in the world and has clinched a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. "I have had Lasik surgery and have been wearing Lasik lenses which have a hard center and flatten out at the end," he said after withdrawing.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem saw Tiger Woods for the first time since his season-ending surgery, and reported Sunday that the No. 1-ranked golfer was his usual self, except for being about 10 pounds lighter and walking with a slight limp. "He lost 12 or 13 pounds after surgery, gained a few back," Finchem said. "He looks kind of thin." Woods and Finchem were at Congressional Country Club to speak with the members about the club hosting the AT&T National for six years after the 2012 U.S.

If it were up to Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk, golfers would be going for the gold. "Having golf an Olympic sport is exponentially more important to the game of golf than the majors," Mickelson said Tuesday from the site of the season's final major, the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills. "The reason for that is it would bring in 168 different countries and their Olympic foundation and all those revenues and that would be going towards the growth of the game.

Annika Sorenstam completed her last major championship with a 10-foot birdie putt for a 4-under 68 at the Women's British Open on Sunday although she was well out of contention for the title. The 37-year-old Swede, who will leave golf at the end of this year to pursue business interests and start a family, had her best round of the week as she hit every green on the 6,408-yard Old Course at Sunningdale.

Ji-Yai Shin has won the Women's British Open by three strokes after a final round 6-under 66. The 20-year-old South Korean captured her first major victory Sunday after an 18-under score of 270. Yani Tseng of Taiwan was second with a 66 and a 15-under total of 273 Shin's victory continued Asia's domination of majors on the LPGA Tour. Tseng won the LPGA Championship and Korea's Inbee Park took the Women's U.S. Open.
